I'm sure many of you have already heard the news from the SEI about the CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) and PCMM (People Capability Maturity Model) being moved out from the SEI to another department within Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).
While it is still unclear as to what the repercussions of the move will be, all initial indications are that nothing related to the models, other than the stewards, will change. The expectation is that the fee structures, certifications, appraisals, etc. will all remain unchanged.
The new business unit in CMU that these models will now fall under is not yet fully formed, so it is too soon to know what the future holds.
Is this a positive or negative change? It really is too soon to tell, but I think that this could open the models up to heavier influence by the practitioners as opposed to the Department of Defense (DoD) - a positive thing.
At DCG, we believe in the value of CMMI, and we offer CMMI-certified training, appraisals, consulting and compliant artifacts. As such, we are following this change closely as it continues to play out.
Check back in; we will continue to post updates and reflections as they are announced.
